Microsoft Patents Emergency Data... Just Days After 9/11

The latest in a very long line of silly Microsoft patents is this one concerning a computer system for providing emergency data -- which TheRegister jokes is the same as patenting 911 service, though that isn't really what the patent describes. Instead, the patent talks about a system for displaying emergency data, but almost nothing in the patent seems particularly unique or innovative. However, there is one clue towards what gave folks at Microsoft this idea: Microsoft filed this patent soon after the September 11th attacks in 2001.
