Crackdown On Spam Continues With Tough Sentence in Virginia

Although there are still a lot of spammers running around here in the U.S., their numbers are going down, thanks in part to more criminal convictions. One spammer in particular could be going down for a long time: Jeremy Jaynes, who was indicted over a year ago and recently convicted in Virginia for blasting people with 10 million unwanted emails a day. Looks like the judge got one too many Viagra come-on himself, as he has now accepted a jury's recommended sentence of 9 years in prison. Sounds pretty harsh, even for an insidious spammer. But surprisingly, the defense argued that the sentence was too long because Jaynes is an out-of-state resident being charged under a new law. Huh? Perhaps this is just a legal technicality with the same underlying idea that the punishment might not fit the crime. Still, it certainly sounds like he's admitting that the sentence would be fine if he had been tried with a similar crime in his home state of North Carolina. It's being appealed, and it's likely the sentence will get reduced. Here's hoping that he sees at least a little bit of jail time. Just don't give him access to email or the mail room, or prisoners will be start getting messages about penis enlargement.

    Only in America....

    How can Spyware vendors like 'Clara' be alowed to ply their trade when spammers get jail????

    Can always delete spam, can't delete spyware

      I ran some numbers regarding this and what his conversion ratio must have been to get the kind of revenue the charges were claiming... something like .00016 - suckers born every minute.

      Its a sliding scale really...

      small time operation = not much money = mucho jailtime so the powers that be show they are doing something.

      big company = lots of money = lobbyists = slap on the wrist 75K fine on scamming millions = cost of doing business

    good deal on jail on spammers!

    I can't stand spam! i clutters my email, and makes me spend unneccessary minutes flipping through whats actual email and what is trash. I only wish more spammers recieved more jail time! 5 years and a $50,000 fine is fine with me anything more yeah i agree is a bit overkill, but also along with those 5 years, and $50,000 fine they can never use a computer ever again! let alone be able to have an email address! they touch or use a computer! handcuffs get slapped back on! and another 5 years and $75,000 fine. this shouold be a felony as it is fruad, hacking other systems to gain access to utilize, as well as sociliting without permission, and false advertising and scamming.

    This is a step in the right direction i can only hope we hear more of this, and the spammers that are "out of state" can be prosecuted in another state for their activities!

    SPAM on message boards is pretty bad too. James you should be prosecuted.
