Google Expanding Gmail Storage: Wants To Make It Virtually Limitless
from the and-so-it-goes... dept
It was exactly a year ago that Google launched their Gmail service shocking many into believing it was an April Fool's joke, because it offered so much more service than anyone else. The company even made it difficult to delete messages within Gmail, claiming that 1 gig would last a lifetime. Well, apparently some people used up that lifetime supply much faster than Google expected. Just days after Yahoo caught up to offer 1 gig of storage, Google is doubling Gmail's storage to 2 gigs, which sounds like the beginning of a storage war (instead of a price war). However, one of the statements in the article is a bit odd. It suggests Google is going to keep increasing the amount of storage allowed every day, so that it really is somewhat limitless. It's not clear then, why they don't just get rid of all limits on Gmail -- or just revert back to last year's glitch where some people thought they had 1 terrabyte of Gmail storage. At least all of my spam will have plenty of room to stretch its legs now.

How much do they have?
Most likely what Google is doing here is offering what they don't have knowing full well they don't have enough space to cover what they offer. But, as I said, each user filling up their 2GB will never happen.
