Did Barry Diller Just Admit He Bought Ask Jeeves On A Whim?

from the seems-to-be-what-he's-saying dept

While certainly there was some head scratching over why Barry Diller's IAC bought AskJeeves, statements out of the company today are even more strange. The company has admitted that going forward they're going to be "more selective." Does that mean, they weren't particularly selective at all in buying Ask Jeeves? Apparently so: "We would look at other things but the bar would be higher." Makes you wonder if they're having a bit of buyer's remorse. While they go on to say that Ask Jeeves will be an important part of their strategy going forward, it still seems like an odd, and somewhat disparaging, thing to say about their newly acquired search engine property.

Perhaps... on the other hand, saying what a great buy it is and how critical it is to their future strategy might invite other bidders with an axe to grind...

Jeeves makes money and for the conglomerate that IAC is buying a search engine would make sense, since just they could send the traffic up by millions, if they linked it with their CitySearch and Expedia properties.

But buying #4 player in the industry... I don't know, sort of like staying in "Second Best Western" hotel (was in one of the Simpsons episodes).
