They're realizing how important technology has become to the job, and if they don't have the necessary tools, they know that, not only will they fail in the current job, but it will set them back at future jobs for not being aware of the latest and greatest. It's certainly a change from not so long ago, where many people insisted that the technology was irrelevant to how well they could perform on the job.
