Minnesota Government That Wants To Tax VoIP Also Using VoIP

from the wait-a-second... dept

Remember the Minnesota state government that is really serious about taxing VoIP? The same state government that won't take no for an answer after being told to leave VoIP untaxed again and again and again? It appears that that very same Minnesota government that wants to make sure VoIP is being taxed, is also ditching traditional phone lines to use VoIP because, you know, it's cheaper. In fact, the article notes that the state is saving taxpayer money because they don't have to pay so much for phone lines.

  • huh?

Not quite sure what the point here is. VOIP lines are cheaper, but *not* because of state tax differences (most states exempt their government functions from state taxes anyway).

Actually, taxes between the two differ quite a bit in most sates and was one of the reasons I personally changed in California. I finally said "enough" on having $7 in various taxes and fees on my $15 local phone bill - so about a 50% tax rate. My VOIP charge is far, far less.
