Sony To Offer Proprietary Format Movies On PSP

from the is-this-what-we-want dept

For a company that claims they've learned their lessons about proprietary formats and DRM, Sony doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon. Beyond just trying to make the new portable gaming platform, the PSP, have its own download music store they're also going to be releasing videos of some movies for the PSP on the special format discs that will only work on the PSP. At what point does Sony realize that they're shooting themselves in the foot? People don't want proprietary formats that only work in very specific devices any more, and every time Sony tries and fails to do so again, they seem to simply ignore this lesson.

Yes, Sony IS going to be selling movies on UMD. This has been known for ages.
    But:
Sony MAY open the UMD format up, and it's quite possible to convert your existing DVDs to H.264 and shove them onto your memory stick.

My grandmother bought records sixty years ago. I can still listen to the music on those records today, even though I don't have her old record player, or even the same brand of record player.

If I were you, I would expect the RIAA to come breaking down the door to your grandmother’s retirement condo, and throw her saggy ass in jail any day now.

She is clearly violating copy write.

The music download store sounds like a bad idea, but a proprietary format to sell movies on was necessary since the media has to be a smaller size than a dvd

    Oh well,
I was eagerly looking forward to buying a PSP so I could combine music, visoe & a portable console for traveling entertainment ...

Guess I'll jus stick to my laptop.
