Netflix Goes Social

from the social-networking-is-a-feature... dept

As Netflix has been working hard to figure out ways to stay ahead of the expanding competition, it looks like they're really trying to leverage the large and (mostly) loyal community built up around the DVD rental service. BuzzHit points out that Hacking Netflix has the scoop on Netflix expanding into the social networking space, leveraging their community to recommend additional movies to each other. It's an interesting move not just in the sense of Netflix continuing to innovate the way they interface with customers, but also in showing how all this "social networking" stuff, really is a "feature" to complement other services. Update: Buzzhit now has a review of the service. Basically, he says it's a good start, but could use a couple of improvements.

  • Thank you sir

FWIW, agreed w.r.t. social networking as a framework (i.e., underpinning), not as a category of sites unto themselves.
Having lived through the whole 'push' meme of the '90s, I can only hope that it ends better for this set of entreprenuers.

From my first days as a netflix subscriber, i've constantly pinged them to include a "recommend this film to your friends" feature that would build list of suggestions ala the Amazon wishlist. Seemed to me to be kind of a big "duh!"
