Wondering why you get so much spam from both fraudulent spammers and legitimate companies? This will surprise absolutely no one, but it's because the ROI makes it worthwhile. The response rate comes in sixth, well behind many other forms of direct marketing, but the low, low cost of spam means that email is the second most effective form of direct marketing after telemarketing. Apparently, enough people like to be annoyed over email and the phone to make it worthwhile for marketers to bug the 95% to 99% of us who would prefer to just be left alone.
