The Damage Done By Laying Fiber
from the fun-fun-fun dept
How badly do you want a fiber connection to your door? Broadband Reports notes that work being done to lay fiber is leading to all sorts of problems, including many broken "sewer, water, gas and reclaimed water lines" every day. That, of course, is one of the big downsides to having to put down fiber, as opposed to setting up (much slower) wide area wireless connections. While there hasn't been that much coverage over whether or not fiber will compete with wireless technologies for backhaul, that's going to be an interesting space to watch over the next few years. Fiber, obviously, has a huge advantage on bandwidth, but wireless has lower capital costs and the advantage of (in some cases) mobility and easier set up.
