The Creative Commons (famous for promoting 'CopyLeft' licenses) is expanding into patents and scientific publishing in order to combat the current patent processes and the restrictive licenses of most scientific journals. Strangely, I always thought the Public Library of Science was an off-shoot of the Creative Commons, but apparently, the two only have similar goals but don't share any common people (please correct me if I'm wrong about that). So it seems like two organizations that were created for the purpose of sharing information aren't sharing many resources. Hopefully, though, that's just an oversight, and the two won't actually compete with each other by further creating a dizzying variety of copyleft licenses and patent alternatives. Although more copyleft licenses aren't such a bad thing, some cooperation and shared efforts might give the copyleft movement additional momentum.
