Confusing A WiFi Access Point With A Bomb

from the talk-about-security-scares... dept

For all the talk about the "security" risks of setting up an open or community WiFi access point, I doubt many people expected this to happen. Down in Australia, a guy who set up an outdoor WiFi access point was quickly (within 10 hours) visited by the police and a bomb squad after a confused neighbor reported that he spotted the guy setting up a "bomb" on his property. The police then proceeded to dig up the cabling the man had used to install the access point and quiz him about this crazy WiFi concept, before deciding it wasn't worth evacuating the neighborhood to save them from the threat of free WiFi exploding.

our utility company used a piece of gear that looked like a rifle with high power scope to check the transformer switches on top of the power poles. after 9/11/2001, they decided that wasn't the best design for this gear. they told the supplier to redesign them quick.
