Digital Divide Among Kids Is Shrinking

from the going-away dept

For all the talk about the "digital divide" and how poorer kids weren't getting access to the internet that would be important to their ability to get jobs in the future, it looks like much of the problem is going away. Nearly all children in the US now have some form of internet access, though, there still are differences in how they access it. It shouldn't be much of a surprise to find out that wealthier families are more likely to have internet access at home for their kids. Either way, this is clearly a positive step.

Wealthy??? I earn about $26,000 a year, have 5 kids, and have had internet for about 8 years, even when working at a minimum wage job! A source of research & recreation took precedence over cable, bong's and brown bottles in my house!

I remember back in the early 90s watching some local talking head program where an activist for the poor was pleading for families in poverty to sell their TVs and take that money and put it into a computer. I think she was on to something.
