Now You Need A Backup For Your Backup

from the multiple-points-of-failure dept

At a personal level, I now have learned that it pays to have multiple backup systems, because if you just have a single backup system, it's almost guaranteed to fail at the same time as your main system. Apparently, that's true on a larger scale as well. Following Akamai's recent problems, some are suggesting that companies not rely on one partner for DNS resolution, but bumping things up to rely on two separate providers, just in case one of them can't actually keep their systems running -- even if that's part of their promised services. Apparently, redundancy now means "paying twice as much."

Use ZoneEdit (http://www.zoneedit.com), who provides backup DNS service for $11/year. That covers ~1 million DNS requests, after which you have to pay another $11.
