Cisco, Nortel Meet; Nothing Happens

from the well,-that's-useful dept

The business trade press is buzzing about the fact that the CEOs of Nortel and Cisco met with each other. The banking types immediately started drooling over the potential of a huge merger deal that would kick off lots of banking fees -- but Cisco's John Chambers killed off that plan by joking that he doesn't know how to do big merger, preferring to pick up smaller companies instead. The fact that these two companies would talk about partnering isn't all that surprising. In the same way that Microsoft and SAP held talks that amounted to nothing, lots of large companies hold rather information explorations into partnership and/or merger opportunities. They only really get interesting when a real deal is made. Otherwise, it's just talk.
