Groups Sue FCC Over The Broadcast Flag

from the taking-action dept

A bunch of groups, including the American Library Association, the EFF, Public Knowledge and the Consumers Union have now gone so far as to file a lawsuit against the FCC concerning their broadcast flag ruling back in November. You may remember that the FCC said that all digital TV receivers will be required to recognize this flag after a certain point - meaning many TV watchers will need to upgrade their equipment in order to lose some fair use rights. And, of course, none of this will actually do much to stop piracy (the main reason the entertainment industry was pushing it). The groups are now claiming that the FCC overstepped its bounds: "The FCC's digital broadcast television mandate is a step in the wrong direction because it would make digital television cost more and do less, undermining innovation, fair use, and competition."
