More Employees Laid Off By Text Message

from the only-way-to-contact? dept

This isn't the first time (and unlikely to be the last), but a group of striking workers in Korea have been laid off by text message by their employer. While the initial reaction to this is likely to be one of outrage over the method (as has been the case in similar stories in the past), they might actually have a good case this time. The company claims this was the only way to reach the striking workers, which could be true - since they certainly weren't at their desks. It also wasn't a direct firing, but a message telling them they would be laid off if they didn't file for a voluntary retirement package by a certain date. Of course, in at least one previous case in the UK, a judge ruled that such a method of firing was unfair and demanded additional compensation for the employees.
