321 To Appeal Ruling, Offers New DVD Copying Software Without Ripper

from the find-the-missing-component dept

Following Friday's news that 321 Studio's DVD backup software had been found illegal, 321 Studios is saying they'll appeal the case all the way to the Supreme Court, if necessary. At the same time (and probably much more interesting), 321 has come up with a way to get around the judge's ruling. They're going to keep offering a version of their product without the ripper component - which is what that judge ruled illegal. Of course, free rippers can be found all over the internet, and it wouldn't be surprising if 321 told people how they could get one. Of course, that does make you wonder why you would actually need 321's offering at all. Once again, though, it looks like a Hollywood win will just mean people will go further underground. At least when they were using 321's offerings they really were limited in how many copies they could make. This ruling will drive more people to find other online options - which won't have the same limitations.
