FAA Considering License Approval For X Prize Entrants

from the blast-off dept

The Federal Aviation Administration is reviewing proposals on whether or not to grant licenses to two contestants for the X Prize, that would let them see if they can shoot themselves into space. The X Prize is the privately funded contest encouraging anyone to build a rocket that can successfully take people up to the edge of space (at least twice). Whoever gets there first gets $10 million. However, in order to launch something like that, FAA approval is needed. The group behind the prize expects that the licenses will be granted and the first flights will take place before the end of this year. Hopefully, the contestants will win the X Prize and not a Darwin Award.
