Internet Voting System Fundamentally Flawed

from the no,-really,-tell-us-how-you-feel dept

A new internet voting system designed to let overseas US military personnel cast their absentee ballots online was heavily criticized in a report today, suggesting that it's nowhere near secure, and nothing can be done to make it secure, until some fundamental aspects of the internet are changed. The report describes a number of fairly basic ways that the system could be attacked, and the integrity of votes could be jeopardized. The folks backing the system brushed off the criticism by saying, more or less, "thanks, but we don't care - we've got other experts who say it's just dandy, and we'll pick the experts we like better." Of course, when it comes to security, it's nice when you can make your critics happy too. You don't really have the option of just picking the folks who support what you'd like to believe.

  • Why Did They Ask?

    by Beck

So they asked these people to review the system, and then when the review was unfavorable they announce that they will ignore the advice. Why did they bother to ask for a review?
