Vaporware Everywhere
from the still-waiting... dept
Wired News has come out with their always-worth-waiting-for annual Vaporware Awards, for the products that were promised in the last year (or earlier!), that people have been desperately waiting for, but which never shipped. As in past years, there are a number of video game titles on the list, including Duke Nukem Forever. However, this year, instead of taking the number 1 spot (for the third year running), Wired decided to give them a well-deserved "lifetime achievement award" for producing nothing but a lot of hype - for six straight years. To be honest, I thought some of the "dishonorable mentions" were better than the winning entries. SCO's legal evidence against Linux, for example, is a perfect example of vaporware. Also receiving a dishonorable mention was the well-hyped OQO, which turned some heads (yet again) at CES this year, but is still way overdue. In fact, the little computer, which made the vaporware list in 2003 has been so vaporous that people didn't even vote it onto the list this year.

The vaporware I am still waiting for is the SplashPower SplashPad. Recharge nearly any gadget by wireless induction. The .UK company promised early 2003, mid 2003, late 2003... and got a lot of press for it. But it's still stuck in a "exploring partnering options" phase.

Re: No Subject Given
I was going to vote for Half-Life II, but I note they are already on there as #1 - quite appropriately in my opinion.
