So, despite the fact that it's been done before, a town in Arizona is trying to sell itself on eBay. Basically, eBay has become both a selling platform and a publicity platform.

Since they get the free publicity every time as well, so free advertising, essentially.
I agree with you that the "newness" of these stories should have worn off by now, but this new fangled technology stuff is just SO interesting to some reporters...
