China Creates Alternative DVD Format
from the betamax-part-II dept
The Chinese government has just enveiled an alternative to DVD called Enhanced Versatile Disc. China is currently the world's largest manufacturer of DVD players. And understandably, China would like to avoid DVD licensing fees, but this new standard is probably about 5 years too late. Unless the EVDs provide some advantage (no copy protection, ahem), consumers will probably see no benefit in changing the format that they use. And what sort of crazy content provider(s) would license to this new format?

My question that has not been answered by any of the articles is this: What will EVD's do that DVD's do not ? What is the enhancement to make me run right out and buy a combo DVD/EVD/CD/CDR/CDRW/DVD etc player ?
