VeriSign Sells Network Solutions

Having just brought back the Network Solutions brand name for their own domain name registration business earlier this year, VeriSign surprised some folks today by selling that business off. VeriSign, of course, retains control over the .com and .net directories, but in selling off the domain registration service, it actually might take away one (of many) criticism about SiteFinder. Some people were complaining that for every typo domain, VeriSign was going to push people to Network Solutions to buy it themselves. Of course, these days, many people who had to deal with Network Solutions as a domain registrar years ago have learned enough to stay as far away from them as possible. The brand has a lot of negative connotations that go with it, so it will be interesting to see if the new owners, Pivotal Private Equity, can actually do anything with it.

The other vicious rumour is that Pivotal does a lot of business with the evil Canopy Group, which brings us the SCO link.
The suggestion by the Gnazis and Slashdotters is that the link with Canopy and SCO suggests that Pivotal may not really be able/interested in doing more with the company than mass layoffs before flipping it to Mr Noorda or one of his pals.
Of course, indirectly, Ray pays for my Froot Loops, so I'm not complaining that such would be a bad thing.
