Minnesota Told To Stop Treating Vonage Like A Phone Company

It’s been nearly two months since the state of Minnesota decided to use the ever-popular “looks like a duck, quacks like a duck” test to decide that Vonage must be a telephone company and told them they need to apply for a license and follow all telephone company regulations. Now, however, a Federal judge has said that Vonage should not be forced to follow those laws, saying that they’re clearly different from a phone company. It appears that the judge has not yet issued a full ruling explaining the decision, but is expected to by the end of the week.

So, cable modem services are a telecom service and not an information service, and Vonage is the opposite? There’s going to be a lot to be reconciled yet here…
