Spammers Fined $250,000
from the that-sounds-good dept
We've all heard stories about folks (especially in Washington State) using local anti-spam laws to win a few hundred bucks off of various spammers (though, getting paid is another story altogether). Now, however, an anti-spam "activist" has used Washington's strict anti-spam law to win a $250,000 judgment against two Ohio spammers. The guy apparently received 58,000 spam emails from them. The law says you can ask for $500 per email, which would have entitled him to $29 million - but he decided to be kind and just ask for $250,000, which the judge seemed to find reasonable. Of course, once again, it's unlikely that the spammers will ever pay up (they never even responded to the lawsuit). However, more lawsuits like this one could make life more difficult for some spammers.

Re: No Subject Given
Nah, that'd be a funny thing to get an Order to Pay, and have the local sheriff sieze some assets. If so, get a ride along: That's a good photo op.
