First Online Piracy Criminal Prosecution

from the great dept

This one fits in well, just as the RIAA is getting ready to file as many lawsuits as they can against people caught file sharing. Someone anonymously submitted the news from Australia that three people who were arrested for online music piracy have admitted guilt and now face lengthy prison sentences. The article is full of music industry "rah rah" of the "we will find you and get you" nature. What it doesn't do is bother to look at what the actual "crime" is and whether or not someone deserves five years in jail for letting people hear music they like. These guys clearly did break the law, but no one seems to be asking if the punishment fits the crime - or whether or not the law even makes any sense.
