Segway Makes You A Mobile Celebrity
from the for-the-time-being dept
I remember a few years back, before the Razor scooter craze began, seeing an interview with Kevin Spacey where he said he rode a similar scooter through the streets of New York. He said it was amazing that when he was on the scooter, no one recognized him - because they were all staring at the scooter. It was such an oddity, that people would be focusing attention on the wheels, and not the rider. Now, twist that around, and put a person who isn't famous on top of a famous scooter, and things are a bit different. A reporter who has been test driving a Segway says it's like becoming an instant celebrity, as you're constantly followed and mobbed by people. He even suggests that it could be a great tool for picking up women, though he (being married) didn't test that idea out. Of course, all of that depends on the Segway remaining obscure - which, at $5,000 a pop and various laws forbidding it, might just happen. He also mentions that they're planning on releasing a new Segway soon that will have much smaller wheels - which is probably a good thing. The wheels seem to be the most unwieldy part of the device.
