New Film Launched Online

from the experimenting dept

Simon Beaufoy, the writer of the movie "The Full Monty", is worried that small independent films are getting pushed out of the movie distribution world. So, he's decided to do something about it. He wrote and filmed a low budget thriller which he's going to release online as something of an experiment. It's going to be offered via streaming video for a small fee. I wonder how many people are going to be willing to sit at their computers to watch a full movie. Certainly some people are willing to and some people have their computers hooked up to their televisions - but it's not that common. Still, it's good to see experiments that look into more ways to make use of the technology. Of course, I think a much more interesting experiment would have been to launch the film via a file sharing system (no bandwidth costs!) and try to build up buzz for it - which could translate into a real movie house distribution deal. Maybe someone else will go that route.

I watch all my DVDs on my computer because I don't have a TV. I don't understand this notion that its more difficult to watch a movie on a monitor. It's no different than a TV, at least not in any relevant respect.
