FTC Finally Realizes That ID Theft Is A Problem

from the that-took-long-enough dept

The FTC has finally realized that, hey, maybe this identity theft stuff really is a big problem. They've done a study (because nothing is official until a study has been done) showing that 27.3 million Americans have been victims of identity theft over the past five years. 27.3 million. That's quite a lot before anyone realizes that it's a "real" problem. It looks like most cases, though, were fairly simple identity fraud cases of misused credit cards or banking accounts. Still, a significant percentage went through the full deal with someone opening up fake accounts in their name.
