Worried About Driving While Yakking? How About Driving While Texting?

from the go-to-jail dept

Having just discussed how ineffective NY's driving-while-yakking laws have been in deterring drivers from using their mobile phones, it appears that's not the only problem legislation is addressing concerning drivers and mobile phones. In Singapore, they're making "driving while texting" a crime that can get you six months in jail. This was apparently in response to a story of a bus driver who was known to drive with one hand and text message with the other while handling his daily route. Of course, Singapore is known for being a bit more stringent when it comes to enforcing laws, so I get the feeling this law may be a bit more effective in stopping this (clearly dangerous) activity.

    Calls vrs. Texting

Having a phone held to my ear and having a conversation while looking forward is a lot different than glancing back and forth between a teeny tiny screen and attempting to spell something at the same time I'm driving.
