Forget The Power Plant, Just Install A Personal Windmill

from the not-so-easy,-though dept

Lots of interest following the blackout in "alternative" means of getting power. Last week we had the story of companies that had their own power plants, but that doesn't do much good if you're stuck at home. While people have talked about solar power in the home for years, it appears that another method of generating your own power is catching on as well: personal wind power. While wind farms have been around for awhile, it appears that there's a growing interest in installing a personal windmill. Of course, it's not as easy as it might seem. First, there needs to be regular wind blowing across your property, which cuts out a huge percentage of places. Furthermore, to really capture the wind, it helps to have the windmill placed on towers that are over 100 feet tall. As you might imagine, this doesn't always please the neighbors (or the local zoning boards).

Actually it only takes a wind of 7mph to generate energy...they are loud but well worth it.

Did you ever have any luck installing a windmill? If so, what did you choose? What was the cost and does it work well?
