Internet Filters Block Valuable Data, Too

from the open-up! dept

A good opinion piece from a top exec at the Kaiser Family Foundation complaining about internet filters. She points out that the problem isn't whether or not there should be filters, but what those filters block. Unfortunately, in most cases the decisions on what to filter are being left up to those who don't really understand how the filters work. The filtering companies make this worse by (a) not being at all open about what they're actually blocking and (b) offering very subjective "default" settings. These default settings tend to overblock sites that should be very useful to teens at school or in the library - including things like health sites.
