Companies Still Not Reporting Computer Break-Ins

from the no-changes-there dept

Shouldn't be much of a surprise, but despite continued efforts to get companies to tell the FBI whenever a computer break-in occurs, the vast majority don't bother. Instead, they keep it to themselves. The article claims that this is because most companies don't want the bad publicity associated with such info becoming public, but in many cases, I'd bet it's because it doesn't really matter. Most IT folks, after a break-in occurs are only concerned with patching their system to make sure it doesn't happen again. They don't care so much about tracking down whoever did it, because that's not going to make a huge difference. There's always going to be another hacker trying to get in. So, once the system has been fixed up, most companies would prefer to forget about it, and not have to relive the experience with a group of FBI agents who are just going to keep asking questions.
