Novell Snaps Up Ximian

from the that-came-out-of-nowhere dept

Lots of surprise this morning in various circles about Novell buying up well-known Linux software maker Ximian. It sounds like a case where both companies were struggling a bit with direction. Novell provides money, customers, and "big corporate brand name", and Ximian provides well-known, widely used (and sometimes quite innovative) Linux apps. So, the question now is whether or not this provides the necessary boost for both companies.

  • Mutiny in the ranks?

    by Mike (not that Mike)

Miguel d'Icaza and Nat Friedman seem to be rather mute on the subject.

Any chance this is indicative of a little dissatisfaction with the deal?

I'd guess since they were co-founders, they were instrumental in making the deal. You probably didn't see much mention of it from Novell's website before the official announcement either. We'll see in a few days. Strategic announcements are stronger when there's a little surprise to it... it got a lot of press mentions.
