Are Online Search Tools Lulling Journalists Into Laziness?

from the it's-just-a-tool dept

Mark Glaser over at OJR has discovered, that just like any story about whether a technology is "good or bad", the internet can be used by journalists for both good and bad reasons. It's certainly a useful tool to dig up background info, find new sources, and get differing viewpoints. However, it also makes it less likely that the reporter will go out and pound the street. Of particular interest is the section on email interviews vs. phone or in-person interviews. Email interviews are nice, because it's generally easier for both sides, and it lets the the interviewee respond more thoughtfully to the questions. However, it also makes it harder for the interviewer to pick up on voice tone, and to immediately follow-up on interesting tangents.

Lazy Journalists? Isn't that repetitive and redundant? You could say biased, lazy, unethical and misinformed, but "journalist" says it all.
