Some Schools Stay Mum On File Traders' Names

While some universities quickly coughed up the names and info of those the RIAA subpoenaed, others are protesting on procedural grounds. Both Boston College and MIT have said they won't give out the info because to do so would violate the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act - which says the university needs to alert a student before giving out any personal information. The RIAA subpoenas claim (for no good reason) that the universities in question only have six days (since extended) to give up the info. The universities claim that this is not nearly enough time to inform a student that his or her private info is about to be coughed up, let them find a lawyer, and fight the subpoena if they feel such actions are warranted. Boston College also claimed that the subpoenas were filed from the wrong court.
