Lawmaker Seeks Greater FBI Role In Online Piracy War

You would think that the FBI would have more important things to do with their time than locking up little Johnny for downloading the latest Britney Spears single. There is that whole terrorism issue going on, after all. However, Congress is proposing that the FBI become Hollywood's enforcers and set up a biased, one-sided panel yesterday to suggest that everyone supports this idea. They even brought out an "embroidery historian" who is upset that people are "stealing" her needlework patterns. Thanks goodness she'll soon be able to rely on the FBI to knock down the doors of those crazy quilter bandits. As the article points out, there are already laws in place that make copyright infringement illegal. Why do we need another bill directing the FBI to waste their time on this? The only person who tried to stand up to this nonsense was Rep. Boucher, who made the very valid point: "I am concerned that we are directing the FBI to conduct an educational campaign on the niceties of copyright law. Will they also inform people about fair use?"

FBI *is* the enforcer
The FBI is Hollywood's enforcement arm. That's the big red screen on every DVD that says "the FBI investigates all cases of copyright infringement" or whatever.
Yeah, I ignore the screen too. Point being, the FBI is already the chief enforcement agency when it comes to piracy issues. I think what's being asked is them to have a more proactive role - i.e., the FBI going after file traders as opposed to RIAA having to use civil proceedings.
