Australian Universities Forced To Give Up Student Data

The music industry isn't just targeting American colleges and universities with their anti-file sharing dragnet. They apparently went after some Australian ones as well. At least in that case, the universities stood up for their student's right to privacy. However, a court today has ordered three Australian universities to hand over records to be searched for evidence of file sharing. An independent third party will do the search, but will have free access to the records. The universities had tried to limit exactly what the searcher could look for, suggesting that simply handing over all records was a violation of their students' privacy, and was going way too far in trying to stop illegal file sharing.
