Mobiles Live Up To Their Name In Ukrainian Throwing Competition

from the sounds-like-a-fun-time dept

Ah, now here's a good Friday time-waster story. It appears that it's "that time of the year" again, as people all over the Ukraine gear up for the annual mobile phone throwing competition. The question this year is whether or not anyone can break the world record of 55 meters. As for how the contest works, in the first round, you get to throw phones donated by sponsors. However, in the final round, everyone must throw a Samsung SGH-R200, to make sure it's a fair toss. It's amazing that this sort of competition hasn't caught on elsewhere.

    No Subject Given

The only way it would make it over here is if it involved some sort of destructive element.

For example, how many pieces can you make the cellphone shatter into when thrown against a brick wall. Or, how fast can you make the annoying ring tone stop by stomping it into the ground.

There are throwing contests here too. Delaware has an annual pumpkin throwing contest, hand or mechanical, and people have built crane-based catapults that throw pumpkins for a few miles.

I hope temporary. My grandmother - off the boat half a centry ago after fleeing KGB roundups in Kiev - would get a kick out of it.

Also, why does everyone keep insisting of saying "the Ukraine". The sentence is just fine with "people all over Ukraine...". We don't talk about people in "the France" insulting Americans or people in "the Iraq" shooting at Americans.
