Huge Gaps In Offerings Plague Online Song Sites

from the what-to-do,-what-to-do... dept

Just as bands are doing their best to opt out of the legal music downloading services, people are beginning to point out that the weak selection is going to hurt these licensed download sites. The idea is that if the various bands don't get their acts together, then the latest crop of music download services will continue to get clobbered by file sharing networks. As the article points out, if a music lover walked into a regular record store that was missing all the big names that all the online stores are missing, they would probably walk out in a hurry.

And it ain't just the big names neither! I can buy CDs of Amy Rigby, Dar Williams or Winfred E. Eye through Amazon, but I can't find any of their stuff on the iTunes store.

Moreover, I'd like to sample a few tracks off the new Liz Phair album at the iTunes music store, they only have two of Liz's 4 big-label albums, and neither of the albums they have is the new (critically panned, so I ain't gonna buy the whole damn thing) album.

    Kazaa it is, I guess.

I could give a flying F about big name artists. I thought the internet would allow me to get legit copies of small name artists too! Of course, they're a little harder to get on Kazaa as well. How hard can it be to set up a reasonable distro system online>!?

Well I am still raving about emusic.com - cheap and has a fantastic selection of music. No, it doesn't all the stuff I want, no, it doesn't have the latest hot albums, but it has a superb collection of material (some of which only exists on vinyl). Highly recommended.
