Did Microsoft Get The Wrong Man In Their Spam Sting?

from the a-simple-phone-call-to-check-would-have-been-nice dept

Oops. Last week, Microsoft made headlines for filing lawsuits against 15 spammers, including two in the UK. One of the guys in the UK says that Microsoft got the wrong guy. He says he owns a few websites, but one is for his daughter's homepage, and another is for a local flying club. He thinks that whoever owned one of his domains previously may have used it for spamming, and that might be the cause of this mix-up. He said he turned the domain on, and was immediately inundated with spam, so he took it offline. Of course, Microsoft (or their lawyers) probably could have found this out by doing a little research, but he claims that the first he heard of this was when he was served with the charges. Microsoft has said they'll take this info into account, and see if they made a mistake. Meanwhile, the guy and his family are worried about the costs of fighting Microsoft, and say that they hate spam - and even have made sure their children are blocked from receiving as much spam as possible.
