It appears that email offenses are growing. More than one in every five companies in the US now claims they've fired someone over email abuse. This isn't very clearly explained in the article. It's not clear what the abuse was that caused the employees to be fired. The study also found that workers spend an average of 25% of their day dealing with email. Of course, that number is somewhat meaningless, because you're averaging this number across such a broad range of jobs with different requirements. The customer service rep may be required to deal with email 95% of the time, but that's what they're there for. However, the report does show that email downtimes cause a great deal of lost productivity, which may explain why it's more stressful than divorce for some people. Another interesting finding is that, while most companies now have software to monitor outgoing email - very few monitor emails between employees within the corporate network.
