Dot Com Turns 20 On Monday

from the happy-birthday dept

A reminder of just how young (or old?) the current setup of the internet is. On Monday we'll be hitting the 20th anniversary of ".com". Apparently it was June 23rd, 1983 when Jon Postel and Paul Mockapetris started testing DNS as a system to translate domain names into IP numbers and vice versa. I'm not sure of the details, and this is a press release, so some of the info might be a bit misleading... Already I have problems with the fact that they claim DNS was originally for translating "web" addresses. This predated "the web" by some time.
