Computer Crime Losses Drop Significantly

from the really? dept

For all the stories about how computer crime is a growing problem that we're never going to get under control, it's a bit surprising to suddenly see a study saying that losses due to computer crime have dropped substantially in the last year. The overall number of crimes reported stayed about the same - but the amount lost was much lower. I have a couple questions about these numbers, though. First, I always have trouble believing "loss" numbers surrounding computer crimes. It's often difficult to put a very accurate number on how much money is lost due to these crimes - and so the numbers are often somewhat fictitious. Also, many companies are afraid to report computer crimes (don't want to make themselves look bad), so you have to wonder how complete the report actually is.

The typical numbers quoted as losses are basically the size of the claims to insurance companies. Claim what you want, but balance it against your future coverage and premiums.
