Japan Passes Privacy Protection Law

from the good-or-bad? dept

Lawmakers in Japan have voted for a new privacy protection bill that gives people the right to get the information any company has collected about them - while also limiting how companies can share that data. Some are complaining that this bill limits freedom of speech, while others say the burden that will be placed on companies responding to requests about the info they collected will be too much. It's certainly an interesting legal issue, to balance the rights of people to protect their personal info with the rights of free speech. As there are more and more databases full of information about people, this issue is only going to start showing up more frequently.
