Sun Employees Carry Workplace In Their Wallets

from the is-it-working? dept

Almost exactly a year ago, Sun announced their plans to become cubicle-less or office-less, and have the majority of their employees be able to work from any open spot (or from home). At the time, I didn't think it would work all that well - as there are some very good reasons to have defined offices and office spaces - specifically in the ability to have quick face-to-face meetings, discussions or brainstorms. Now here's an article looking at the officeless experiment one year after it started. Some still say this is how we'll all work a decade from now - while others clearly can't stand it. Engineers complain that they miss the ability to just brainstorm with others. However, there are a few people who like it. It seems like it really depends on what your role is. I know that, personally, I like having an office. I can (and sometimes do) work remotely - even for extended periods of time, but there are certain things that are easier to deal with in a regular office.
