Companies Are Unprepared For California Data Privacy Law

from the changing-behaviors dept

We've written about the new California data privacy law before. It's going to require companies to tell their customers whenever there may have been a security breach that puts the privacy of their info at risk. This is going to have a huge impact on companies and how they protect their data, and yet, it hasn't received much press. In fact, many companies are not at all prepared to deal with this law, which goes into effect July 1. People who are against the law are complaining that it's way too vague, and that it does little to solve the actual problem of identity theft - but plenty to harm companies. I can see both sides. On the one hand, companies aren't nearly responsible enough for not protecting their customer data - and are slow to respond when that data has been put at risk (often, never letting their customers know). However, an overly vague law is always going to cause more problems than it solves.
