Surveillance Software Boosts Ad Profiling

from the you're-being-watched dept

Remember the days when people online would freak out when they heard that companies like Doubleclick were building detailed profiles of who they were and where they surfed, which they could then sell to advertisers? I guess people are over that, because not many people have noticed that these advertising profiling products are making a comeback - and (of course), the technology is even better than it was a few years ago. The companies using the technology say that the people are still anonymous, and that the profiling just allows them to better target advertisements to their users. Of course, since most users completely ignore online advertising, I wonder how much profiling matters anyway.
