Firms Call For Open High-Speed Net

from the open-it-up... dept

What's an issue that can get many tech companies, consumer electronics companies, and entertainment companies together? Apparently, it's the issue of how the FCC should regulate broadband. A group of companies from all three of those areas - who are fighting on other issues - are lobbying the FCC about their plans on regulating high speed internet access. The main issue is that, currently, the telephone companies are required to open up their lines for DSL to any company. The cable companies, however, are not regulated in that way. The fear is that, in order to align the two, the FCC will take the rules for the cable companies, and move them to the phone companies as well. The protesting companies fear that this creates a world where the cable and phone companies can favor certain services over others and could even limit what types of devices can connect to the internet.
